Foci Fungi is a multi-user roomscale experience in a virtual surrealist mushroom forest. We grow mushrooms where users are standing to depict their level of focus and enjoyment read using bcis (brain computer interface). This way, instead of sharing a space with a simulation of each others physical presence, we experience our mental presences. This project was a group submission for MIT Reality Hack 2023 with team members consisting of Pia Behmuaras, Emre Ozdemir, Casey Armstrong, Marcel Bornstein, and myself.
My work on this project consisted of getting the brain-computer interface to work and creating a system to visually interpret the data from the interface.
A big challenge of this project was getting the brain-computer interface(BCI) to work. The product we were supplied with was incomplete, and its supporting software was full of bugs. One such bug made data transfer to connected devices impossible, but I fixed this by updating its JSON parsing and shared this with other groups that were also working with the device.
